October update

Sunday, 18 October 2015

It has been an excellent half-term at Cherry Oak. We had a ‘critical friend’ visit for our Arts Mark application. The report back was very complimentary and celebrated all the arts provision that our pupils have the opportunity to be involved in. Our School Improvement Partner visit celebrated the achievements and outcomes for our pupils for last year. A copy of our data report can be found on our website under Parents; Policies and Documents: Results. We are very proud of the achievements of all our pupils. Work has also continued on our expansion project. Below are some recent photos of the project. Wishing you all a restful half-term at the end of next week. Justine

Welcome back!

Wednesday, 9 September 2015

We welcomed back our pupils this week after what has been a very busy summer at Cherry Oak. We are delighted that our building expansion project has continued to make good progress. Pupils enjoyed their lunches this week cooked from our brand new kitchen and eaten in our extended hall. At the back of school we can really see how the building is going to look and I was very lucky to have a bird’s eye view from the roof. We are looking forward to another successful term at Cherry Oak! Justine

Building expansion update

Well progress towards our expansion project has really accelerated this week. Our link building has been completely demolished and what a difference it makes to the view. Justine

Our building expansion works begins!

We were all very excited this week when the digger started to demolish the back of our school. We are lucky at Cherry Oak to be having a wonderful expansion project bring new classrooms and facilities for the children. Justine

A new school year

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

A belated welcome back to the Cherry Oak blog after the summer holidays.  Our returning children and new pupils have settled in well and the term is in full swing.

After a busy summer term we look forward to the start of another successful year at Cherry Oak. To share some of our successes with you, in 2012 we developed a five year plan for the vision for Cherry Oak and I am pleased to report that we have made great strides in achieving a number of outcomes already.  We have raised our profile both nationally and locally with ‘good news’ stories in the press. I am so pleased about this as sometimes the achievements of schools are not always reported! This has put the school on the map and we have regular parent visits with very positive feedback. Also, you will see from previous blogs that we re-developed the Backland area after years of fundraising and planning. We are continuing to develop leaders at all levels across the school and of course included in this is our very proactive school council who have inputted their ideas into this year’s School Improvement Plan.

Building work is due to start any day now on a new classroom. There is lots of demand of places at Cherry Oak – a testament to the hard work, skills and commitment of the staff – and I am delighted that the school is continuing to expand.  This is the second year running that we have increased our numbers I am looking forward to our new pupils arriving very soon.

I am pleased to welcome a Family Support Worker to the team and I’m sure she will be an asset to the school providing very valuable support to our families.  Also, we have an ICT Manager, new role for Cherry Oak, who will manage the development of the ICT facilities and infrastructure – one of our school improvement priorities.

Exciting times are ahead of us and with the celebrations for Harvest Festival; first anniversary of the Backland opening; the new class, and, dare I say it, Christmas productions (!) biting at our heals, it’s going to be busy time.

To end this blog, a reminder that at the heart of everything we do is giving all of our pupils the best education they can have in a safe, secure and supportive environment.

A busy half-term at Cherry Oak

Tuesday, 14 May 2013

Sandwiched between May Day and Spring Bank holiday, this week is a busy one for Cherry Oak with a group of children on a residential to Butlins; a day trip to Dodford with Victoria School; rock-climbing sessions as part of the PE curriculum for some of our Year 2 and 3 children; and a group of students from Turves Green Boys School joining our pupils for a physical fitness group. Phew!

We are always thinking of ways to raise money and in the last few months we’ve taken part in Bag2School who pay us for donating clothes, in the last round we raised £180.  We were also delighted when we received an anonymous donation of £1500. The money is going to be spent on new seating for our recently developed Backland area which is designed for outdoor learning and play.  Along with money that staff and pupils have raised over the last two years we are putting together a wish list of equipment and toys to buy for our children to use when they are out on the Backland.

We had our first Federation maths day with our partner school, Victoria, a few weeks ago.  Groups of staff and pupils from across the Federation came together for a morning of maths activities and the response from the session was positive from everyone involved.  The only criticism was that the session was too short! Fantastic!

Yum Yum!  Recently, our school council asked whether they could have more choice for school dinners so Sherrald our Catering Supervisor, organised a great selection of new foods for a food tasting which all of our children took part in.  It was great to see them all enjoying themselves, going around the tables and trying everything on offer.  Everyone was asked to ‘sticky dot’ the foods they liked and the results were sent back to school council for them to choose the new foods on our menus.  We are looking forward to sampling the new food very soon.

Last week, the whole school was invited to Baskerville School in Birmingham to see the CBSO perform which was enjoyed by pupils and staff.  Our children respond so well to music, with some taking part in music therapy sessions each week and a strong music curriculum we try to give them a range of opportunities for sensory learning.

We are working hard to develop our links with the local community and we have recently been offered the opportunity for some of the children to plant bulbs in Selly Oak park, our local park.  This is a great opportunity for the children to further develop their understanding of their local environment and to get hands-on experience of how plants grow.  Thank you very much to the Friends of Selly Oak Park for inviting us to join them.

So we’re ready for a quick break before the last half-term.  I predict another busy few weeks with planning for the end of the year and September.

Hello to a new website!

Thursday, 29 November 2012

Cherry Oak’s new website was launched in November 2012, taking the place of our previous website (shown right).

The old web was initially created in 2007, and it served us for five years. But it is now time for a new-look website that will give us new facilities (such as this Blog and the means to post important messages on the home page), more room to expand,  as well as a fresh new look and up-to-date accessibility options.

So, we say goodbye to our old website, and hello to our new one in the hope that it will serve us well in the years to come
