At Cherry Oak School, we take pride in our holistic approach to supporting children's communication development.
Our Total Communication Approach (TCA) includes various methods such as access to Objects of Reference (OOR), visual timetables, printed materials in the environment, photographs, symbols, and being a Makaton-friendly environment. These are standard practices, ensuring a communication-rich environment at all times, regardless of individual ability.
To further support this, our teachers and assistants are skilled in providing additional augmentative communication aids (AAC) to ensure access to the curriculum and help children in their daily lives.
The communication curriculum is integrated into our Explorers and Hybrid classes, including in-house sessions like EXCOM (Explore Communication) and COPE (Cherry Oak Picture Exchange) opportunities.
The Communication Team work closely with classes to idenitfy any individual support that may be necessary and provide opportunities for 1:1 and small group interventions. We also regularly collaborate with the NHS Speech Therapy Team to ensure that further support is available from an external practitioner who will also support families within their homes.
