Summer Term 

 

Welcome back to the second half of the Summer term. This half term our focus in Early Years and Key Stage 1 is around the theme of Holidays. We will be providing a range of resources for this theme with lesson ideas, videos, storys, songs, and fun activities for you to try at home.

 

We will leave the Spring and first half of Summer terms resources on the page as well so that you can continue to enjoy them or refer back to them at a later date.

Maths Activities/Resources:

 

Counting shells and pebbles.
Providing big and small containers/buckets for children to fill and make sandcastles.
Hide shells and pebbles in the sand or water tray for the children to find and count. Provide the children with small baskets for their collections. Have they all collected the same amount? Who has more? Who has a less?

Science - Understanding The World

 

  • Materials- Think about the different things you might find whilst travelling or on your holiday! Will they he hard? will they be soft? What would an aeroplane feel like to touch? Would it be rough? Would it be smooth? Heavy or light? See if you can find things around your home that might feel the same!

 

  • Light and Dark- Do you think it will be light deep under the sea? Or is it Dark? How can we make the living room dark? What might we need in the dark to see? Try making somewhere in your house as dark as it can be and then shine a torch through a colander, look at the lights refelected on the ceiling and walls, just like fish swimming through the water!

 

  • Environments- Imagine what a sandy beach looks like or how it would feel to walk on. Can you make somewhere in your houseor garden look like the seaside? You could use blankets or pillows and towels to make rock formations or try to make a sand pit or paddling pool! Would it be cold do you think? Or would it be hot?

 

  • Travel- How would you travel to you holiday? Could you catch the bus or cycle or walk? Would you need a special way to get there? Perhaps an aeroplane or a ship? Once you get to your holiday destination how will you trvel around? Walk, cycle, skateboard, ride a horse, get on a train? 

 

  • Forces-  Think about the diferent forces we feel or experience each day
  1. Pushing & Pulling: Try pulling on a stringed toy does it feel different to push it instead? Did you use the same movement? Is it easier to push something or pull it? Or is it the same?
  2. Fast & Slow: Can you sing a favourite song really fast? Or play an instrument really slow? Can you walk really slowly across your garden or living room? Now try it walking fast! which one took longer?
  3. Stop, Start & Go: Play a game that involves stopping and starting perhaps musical chairs or musical statues 
  4. Forwards & Backwards: experiment with moving things or even yourself back wards and forwards

 

  • Ourselves-  Similarities and Diffrences; What foods do we like or dislike? Do we all like or dislike the same things? Understanding our bodies and the functions of body parts. What do we use to walk or pick things up? Which part of the body do we use to hear, see, taste, smell, touch? Stranger Danger can also be talked about whilst exploring these ideas not everyone we meet can be friendly and how to be safe or cautious when meeting new people.

. With support, make a picnic-take it into your garden and pretend you are at the beach-what will you make?

. Use old blankets/sheets-hang them over some chairs and set up a holiday campsite-

. Holiday hunt around the house-find items around the house you think might be useful to pack in your case, ready for a hot/cold holiday.

Creative and Expressive Arts:

 

. Junk Modeling- Create a holiday scene using empty boxes or old packaging. How are you travelling to your holiday? Create an airplane using plastic bottles and the bottle tops for windows.

. Modeling with Playdough-Check out the recipe for making Playdoug at the bottom of the learning page! Try cutting out sandcastles, and make things to pack in your case. 

. Sensory tray play-using flour, rice, dried pasta, soil, shaving foam-Imagine the tray is the beach-what will use to create the sea? Can you build some sandcastles and place pasta boats in the sea? Use your fingers to create wave patterns in the shaving foam. 

. Water play- fill the washing bowl up with water-use figures and pretend they are swimming in the sea. Make some boats and see if they will float.

  • What will an Astronaut want for their dinner? which food is biggest?
  • What might an Astronaut need to do before going to bed? can you put all the things he needs in order from the smallest to the biggest?

  • Travel- How would you get to space or the Moon or another planet? Could you catch the bus or cycle or walk? Would you need a special way to get there? Perhaps a rocket ship or a flying saucer! Once you land on the Moon or an alien planet would you walk or fly around in your spaceship? You could even drive around the planet in a special car or bounce everywhere on a space-hopper!

Physical

 

Moving and Traveling- 

  • Walk like an astronaut! Use big slow movements, jump slowly, hop or skip gently as if you are bounding along the Moon's surface! Don't forget to include backwards and forwards movements in your games. Going backwards might be tricky but it can be very funny!
  • Stretch your arms outwide and "fly" through the air ustretch your arms up high as you reach for the sky! Now crouch down low as you come into land on the surface. 
  • Playing physical games that involve Start, Stop, Go  racing games for example 
  • You might travel to a planet that has a friendly alien or two that would like to play a game with you! Even aliens play musical statues! What other games might they like to play? Perhaps you could teach the "aliens" some of your favourite games. It might be that not all aliens are friendly, what would you do? This can be a useful way of introducing the topic of Stranger Danger to our children.

Creative and Expressive Arts

 

  • Junk Modeling - Create a planet from the empty egg boxes or cardboard packaging or material. Make a rocket ship from an empty plastic bottle, or even make your very own astronaut's suit from cardboard boxes and tin foil!
  • Modeling with playdough- Not everyone has playdough at home or sometimes it can get lost, dry out or sometimes even eaten! But there is a recipe for making playdough at the bottom of this home learning page. It is made from common ingriedents found at home and is safe for our children to build and explore with. Since its made from edible ingredients whilst it really won't taste very nice there is no need to worry if some of it does get eaten.  Once you have made your playdough the you can try cutting out stars or moon shapes. or maybe modeling it into an asteroid or a 3 eyed alien!
  • Sand tray Flour or rice or dried pasta if you prefer- Imagine that the tray is the surface of the Moon can you draw a pattern in the materials in the tray? Use your fingertips to leave "footsteps" on the surface of the Moon. What might an alien's footprint look like? Could you draw it? Perhaps try using differnt parts of your hand or maybe even you own feet to make marks i n the sand tray! You could even hide some figures in the tray and go exploring to find them.
  • Water trays or washing up bowl with sponges and cloths- splash down in the water "landing your rocket" on a mysterious planet. Does your spaceship look like it needs a clean? Give it a wash and you will have it looking like new in no time!

Aided Language Display Board for Activities At Home

 

  • An ‘aided language display’ is a symbol display where all the relevant words for a specific activity are displayed on a single page in symbol form
  • Ensure that symbols are easily accessible in activities
  • They can be used to supplement systems already in place such as Makaton, Communication books or with purely verbal communication as they are quick to make and easy to implement
  • They are a useful tool to support students to communicate in a functional way, within various activities throughout the day
  • Vocabulary is organised to help combine words and build simple sentences from left to right across the display
  • Certain key symbols such as ‘more’ and ‘finished’, which frequently appear on displays, should always be located in the same place each time to help the learner’s understanding and use of them. At Cherry Oak these key symbols or ‘Core Vocabulary’ are located on the left hand side of the display in yellow boxes.
  • When using an Aided Language Display, or ‘ALD’ for short it is important for the person communicating with the child to use the ALD as well.

Here is a short video of two people playing a game using and ALD to support communication. Although the display is slightly different from the ones we use at Cherry Oak the principle is the same.
