So, what exactly is phonics?
Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify sounds or phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words.
The sounds or phonemes are not always obvious or easy to remember when we see them as adults as tend to automatically revert to using the name of the letter rather than the sound they make. For example when we see H we are likely to say HEY-CH rather than think of the sound that letter makes.
For example the word: Hop
Think about how the word sounds as you say it and if you slow down as you say the word you can hear each of the different sounds H-o-p
It may seem a little confusing to begin with but below you will find a short video that will help you to identify those sounds.
